Stumble up the muddy eroding bank. Trudge through the slippery dark woods.
Pretend I didn't just see the reflections of predator eyes. Call into the darkness like an abandoned animal about to reach their fate.
Branches snap. Break. Snap again.
The horses thunder past me & run back.
Torrential down pour. Within seconds I witness creek rocks and landmarks disappear. There is only one way home. Wellies are already filled. Current pulling endlessly at my feet. No tension to hold on the fence line. Alone in the darkness. Eyes behind me. Watching . In the middle of that creek.
Suddenly an eerie presence. A massive shadow emerges blocking any remaining light. A thud. A splash. Warm breath in my face. I reach out blindly. Nothingness. I reach out further as I let go of the fence. Nothing. Too afraid to make a move in this current. Too many slippery rocks. Water past my knees & rising every second.
I reach out again and hit a wall. A huge embrace around a head the size of my torso. We stand in silence for a minute. Share a breath. Then all at once, as if we had counted off together, a firm halter grip & swift movement pulls me out. I steady myself as a soft muzzle plays with my fingers to console me. Then a calming sigh as he turns and continues on.
George came back.
And everything in my world makes sense
